There were many things Anastazka Czarnowska hated about her job at the tech; there were the obnoxious students, the ignorant staff, her windowless office, the monotonous paperwork... Although Ana could have spent several hours compiling a detailed list of why she hated her job, there was one aspect that pissed her off the most; how erratic her hours could be when the college got busy. It had happened in August after exam results, December for the January night courses, and now applications seemed to be flooding in from nowhere for September courses. Ana's lovely job in administration meant she was working late to try and organise interviews for applicants. She felt bad having to call the neighbour playing babysitter for her to keep Kaspar for an extra hour or two, and even worse when she looked at the clock at ten to seven and realised she was meant to have Kaspar at Josh's house for spaghetti in ten minutes. "Fuck," she cursed to herself, pushing her chair back from her desk and standing up. She found her supervisor and told the older woman she needed to leave. After much guilt tripping over the fact she had a four year old son, Ana was finally out of work at five to seven.
She all but sprinted to her neighbours house and dragged her son out. As Kaspar happily waved a painting at her that he had done for Rodnay, Ana racked her brains for Josh's address and then when she remembered, tried to figure out how to get there from her street. She hoped to god that the rough map that she had come up with in her head was right and took off with Kaspar in tow. It wasn't very long into their walk before Ana stopped again, realising she would just appear rude if she showed up at Josh's house empty handed. She took a detour after turning onto High Street into the Centra. Ana wasn't sure what exactly what the etiquette was when buying someone playing host a gift. Or if she was over-formalising the whole thing. She picked up a bunch of flowers and a yo-yo for Rodney then went to pay for them. Ana went outside and tucked the yo-yo into a pocket of her handbag, then bent down so Kaspar could jump up and get a piggyback to speed up the last of their walk. A few minutes later she turned on to Josh's street and found his house.
As she let Kaspar jump off onto the ground Ana pulled her phone out to look at the clock. It was now a quarter past seven. "Gówno," Ana muttered. She was pulled from her worrying about how offended Josh would be with her poor time-keeping by realising that she was still wearing her work clothes. Considering she hadn't even stopped at her flat to have the oppurtunity to change Ana wasn't sure why she was surprised at still wearing her workwear, but the thought popped into her head regardless. She unbuttoned her waistcoat to try and appear more casual in her attire, then took a deep breath before rapping on Josh's front door, unwittingly crushing some flowers in the process, and taking Kaspar's hand that didn't have the painting in it.

Josh and Rodney were sitting quietly on the sofa watching In The Night Garden, waiting for Ana and Kaspar to arrive. Josh didn’t know why he’d arranged this dinner so late in the evening, Rodney was usually asleep by half seven! His son was snuggled up against him, fading fast. Josh kept having to suddenly lift him onto his knee and tickle his belly in order to keep the youngster awake.
“You need to stay up for Kaspar coming.” He told his son, lifting him onto his lap and kissing him on the forehead. “Kaskar?” Rodney asked, a smile washed over his little face and he leant back happily against his dad again. “I’m hungy.” He informed Josh and Josh sighed slightly. “I know, pet.” He mumbled. He lay back on the sofa and Rodney sat on his stomach.
Being the prepared and clever young man that he was, Josh had already prepared his masterpiece of spaghetti bolognaise earlier. It was sitting in a pot beside the stove so he literally had to heat it up and serve it once she arrived. He allowed Rodney to have a Petit Filou at five past seven because the little boy was looking positively faint.
After what felt like an age, there was a smart knock on the door signalling the arrival of Ana and Kaspar – at least he hoped that what it was signalling. Sure enough the Polish/Hungarian/Belgian pair were standing at the door. She looked beautiful and dressy. Josh immediately felt like he looked too trampy for the occasion and began to blush. “Want to see my toys?” Rodney asked Kaspar and then ran away, expecting him to follow. Josh stood awkwardly in the doorway for a second, “Come in, come in.” He invited her, gesturing towards the hall and then smiling widely, “You look lovely.” He told her and rubbed his head on the leg of his scruffy jeans.

Ana smiled as the front foor opened to reveal Josh and Kaspar, hoping she didn't look half as flustered and dishevelled as she felt. There was a silence between the pair, during which Josh immediately blushed. Ana tried not to smile wider; she was oh so very fond of what she considered his trademark blush. "Hi," she said with a little wave. She then held out the bunch of flowers to him. "These are for you. Sorry they're not really manly. I did a bit of a last minute rush in the shop for something..." Ana was screaming at herself to shut up in her head, realising that by telling him the gift was last minute she was still making herself out to be an impolite guest for forgetting until late on in the first place.
Kaspar looked up at her when Rodney asked if he wanted to see his toys, and she nodded at him, thinking it was a sign he wanted to know if it was okay for him to go off. "No, mamia. Yo-yo!" He reminded her, holding his free hand out. Ana reached into her handbag to hoke about for the little toy then gave it to Kaspar. "Play nice and speak english," she told her son, trying to keep the advice quiet so Josh didn't think her son was a bit of a moron and needed these symbol reminders to function. Josh grinned as he took it from her then ran off down the hallway after Rodney, trying to keep up with his friend so he didn't get lost in the new house.
Ana smiled at Josh again in thanks as he told her to come inside, then stepped into the small hallway past him, trying her best not to rub against him and create some sort of weird atmosphere. She let out a small laugh of disbelief when he told her she looked lovely. "Thank you, that's a pretty nice thing to hear when you're wearing your work clothes." She left out the fact she'd been wearing them for the last nine hours, figuring that fact about her outfit would just be too gross. "That's why we're late." Ana said, deciding she had to give some form of explanation. Then she realised that was a bit of a crappy explanation. "Not my clothes, I mean I didn't get out of work until late. Application rush at the minute. Sorry." Ana quietened down when she got her reason and apology out, realising she was starting to do a nervous babble, a horrible trait of hers. "How are you?" She asked, figuring a question would take away from her embarassing rambling.

Josh’s cheeks burnt an even brighter red when she presented him with flowers, was he not supposed to give her flowers as the man? He wasn’t sure what was date etiquette or whether she even knew this was a date – it was a play date, for their over-tired sons. “They’re lovely.” He nodded exuberantly and accepted them out of her hands, holding them awkwardly out in front of him. “I should put these in a…” He couldn’t remember the word for the glass object that you trapped flowers in… “Vase.” He finished eventually and then smiled widely at her.
Rodney and Kaspar disappeared down the hall leaving the adults alone. Now what? Josh didn’t know what to do and was immediately glad that he had complimented her so early on her appearance as she seemed a little flustered and rambley. It was good, because Josh wasn’t sure what to say, how to act. It was good that she was filling the silences that he couldn’t cope with and didn’t know how to break. “It’s always when you’ve got somewhere to go that you get out late.” Josh agreed, thinking back to the countless times when he should have been out of work at seven and he didn’t get out until half past seven, sometimes even eight because of a dinner time rush.
“How are you?” She asked and Josh shrugged slightly, “I’m okay. Quite tired. I was on the open this morning so I was in work from half five until two in the afternoon.” He explained to her and smiled weakly, hoping that the red of his cheeks was wearing off as he grew more comfortable in his own home again, “How are you?” He returned the question. Then he looked about him and towards the kitchen door, “I should heat dinner.” He said more to himself than to her, “Do you want to watch telly or come with or…?” He trailed off, unsure of what other options they had available to them and he smiled awkwardly.

Ana beamed when Josh said the flowers were lovely, glad she had made a good choice from the small range of flowers that hadn’t wilted or had half the petals missing from sitting in a shop the whole day. She nodded in agreement with Josh’s thought that he should put the flowers in a vase, ”They normally have a little sachet of plant food to mix in with the water, don’t they?” It had been so long since someone had ever bought flowers for Ana that she was taking a shot in the dark by asking if there was a sachet included with the flowers, but figured it could be useful regardless.
Ana nodded at Joshes comment, glad he wasn’t annoyed that she had arrived late. It made her feel quite awkward sometimes when people were real sticklers for time and took any late arrival as a mortal offence of life against them. She had a supervisor before Hallowe’en that had been like that and nearly bit Ana’s head off when she was ten minutes late after dropping Kaspar off at nursery. ”Just a shame that they can’t let people go after the designated work hours,” she replied after a moment. ”Still, it’s more money in my pocket at the end of the month,” Ana added as an afterthought, smiling brightly so Josh didn’t think she had come to his house just to complain about being kept late at work.
”Half five?” Ana repeated in horror. The man before her was a marvel. She couldn’t imagine having to get up at that time to go to work. Half eight was too early of a start for her sometimes. ”You’re a marvel for being able to go to work at that time,” Ana informed him, finding a new respect for her friend. She pondered for a moment how she could reply to his return of the question. She was stressed, exhausted mentally and physically, and a little bit homesick these days. ”I’m fine thanks,” Ana replied cheerfully, deciding their friendship hadn’t reached the stage that she could just dump a load of emotions on him without making it weird. She shifted the weight of the bag on her arm and gave a small nod when Josh mused that he should heat dinner, wondering if that was something she should reply to. ”I’ll come with if that’s okay; I’m in dire need of adult company that I actually enjoy,” she replied with a smile.
